The New York/ New Jersey region opened the celebration of the Bicentennial of the charism of charity in North America with a liturgy and luncheon at Holy Family Chapel at the motherhouse of the Sisters of Charity of Saint Elizabeth in Convent Station, NJ on Saturday, January 3, 2009. Fr. John Freund was the principal celebrant of the opening ceremony liturgy. Click to read his homily or listen to the audio.

Sister Regina Bechtle addressed parishioners and visitors at Holy Rosary Church/St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Shrine on January 4. Read her reflections. The January 15, 2009 issue of Catholic New York online http://cny.org/archive/er/er011509.htm has a great article about the Jan. 4 celebration at State Street. John Woods wrote a full, accurate and appreciative account of the celebration and the contribution of St. Elizabeth Seton.

Who We Are

Deus.CaritasWe are the Sisters and Daughters of Charity, who with our lay associates and colleagues, live, pray, and serve in the tri-state area since 1817. We are a grassroots and leadership group from four congregations:

The Sisters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul, New York

The Sisters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul, Halifax

The Sisters of Charity of Saint Elizabeth, New Jersey

The Daughters of Charity, Northeast Province, Albany

We were birthed by the impetus of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, founder of the first active religious community of women in the United States in Emmitsburg, Maryland in 1809. Continuing the legacy of Mother Seton, a native New Yorker and first American-born saint, we are part of the Sisters of Charity Federation which comprises 12 congregations, approximately 4,000 vowed members and 700 lay associates, serving coast to coast in the U.S., Canada, and more than 30 other countries. We trace our roots to St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, who adapted the rule and the vision of St. Vincent de Paul and St. Louise de Marillac for the needs of the Church in early 19th century America.
